Amphetamines Project
The Drug
and Alcohol Multicultural Education Centre (DAMEC) has secured funding from the
Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing to implement an amphetamine-type
stimulant (ATS) project for Arabic, Filipino and Vietnamese Communities in New South Wales. The
project is tailored to develop culturally appropriate information resources for
Arabic, Filipino and Vietnamese speaking communities, particularly aimed at
leading ATS users to treatment services. The strategy will involve
consultations with users from these three backgrounds.
Hoa Binh Families Talk
The
principal aim of this project is to improve the capacity of families of
Vietnamese speaking background to prevent and limit the harm caused by illicit
drug use especially among young members of the community. The project will
focus largely on providing parents, extended family members and the community
with the skills and knowledge required to interact effectively with young
people and to respond appropriately in relation to drug related matters.
Young African Companions
The Young
African companions project (YAC) came into being as a result of concerns and
issues raised by African community members and the trained senior African
companions during the implementation of DAMEC’s first African community
education and capacity building project on drug and alcohol. The project
targets young Africans from refugee background between the ages of 16 – 24 and
is based on a peer education model.
